LATVIA – A Midsummer Dream

One of the less explored areas of Eastern Europe, Latvia is full of enchanting moments – from soaring medieval castles speckled across a vast and untouched countryside to sprawlinggolden beaches and a beautifully layered culture. Here are our top recommendations for a trip to this Baltic state.

Must See: No journey to Latvia is complete without a trip to the coastal capital of Riga. Check out Old Town Townfor a taste of Latvian history and architecture. Sit down at one of the countless cafes that line the cobbled streets for a cup of artisanal coffee. And cap it off with a walk down Jauniela, considered to be one of the most beautiful streets in all of Latvia.

Must Try: Food in Riga is an intriguing mix of foreign influences and local traditions, with elegant restaurants and Europe's biggest food market. Don't forget to try pork – a key element in Latvian dishes, accompanied with dark rye bread or rupjmaize. Top it off with Black Balsam, Latvia's national spirit which is said to aid digestion!

Pro Tip: To experience life like a local, visit Latvia in time for the dreamy celebrations of Jāņi. This magical midsummer festival dates to the medieval era and is a local favourite! People celebrate the summer solstice by getting out into the countryside and staying up all night long with bonfires, folk songs, good food and warm company.

Local Legend: Believe it or not, mushroom picking is a favourite hobby of Latvians, come autumn. And with 50% of Latvia covered in jungles, there's a larger area to go foraging! You can even hire a mycologist (mushroom expert) for a day to take you around.

Best time to travel: Spring and Autumn are usually the most popular time to visit, with temperatures on the milder side. But we recommend the Summer months of July-August, as the crowds are lesser and max temperature hardly exceeds 20-25 degrees Celsius. Carry a raincoat as occasional showers are normal.
